ACWA
Aquatic Connections and Watershed Awareness
2nd Grade Offerings
Swamp Survival Skills
Students explore characteristics of different Everglades habitats, and investigate how plants and animals are specially adapted to life in the Everglades.
North Side Only (8537 Northlake Blvd)

Marsh Critter Query
Students collect aquatic organisms, observe their behavior, and discuss how they interact with each other and their environment. The fact that all the creatures they find can live in marsh means the water is clean, making a healthy environment for animals and good drinking water for people. The students discuss their life cycles and identify animals that spend different life stages in different types of environments. Bring a change of clothes and shoes. Students will get wet and muddy. Closed-toed shoes required.
Uplands Plants and Animals
Students will stroll through the upland area of GWP’s north side. They will compare and contrast the upland and wetland environments, and have the opportunity to look closely at some upland plants and animals to discover how they are uniquely adapted to living in a drier environment. Students identify water as an example of a limiting resource and explore the effects of water shortages in an upland environment. Closed-toed shoes required.

Grade-Level Expectations
SC.D.1.1.2 The student compares the characteristics of things that live on land, in the water, and in the air. The student knows that some organisms have adaptations that enable them to move from one medium to another (for example, dragonflies begin life in water, move to land, and then fly in the air).
SC.F.1.1.3 The student knows some factors that influence the growth of living things (for example, amount of water, amount of light, amount and type of food, type of soil).
SC.F.1.1.4 The student understands that structures of living things are adapted to their function in specific environments.
SC.F.2.1.2 The student knows that plants and animals are adapted to different ranges of temperature and moisture.
SC.G.1.1.3 The student understands that living organisms need to be adapted to their environment to survive.
SC.G.2.1.1 The student knows selected resources used by people for water, food, and shelter are limited and necessary for their survival.
